Reports of ongoing contract extension negotiations between Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have persisted for more than a year now. Despite this prolonged discussion, there hasn’t been any concrete progress. This has fueled speculation that Prescott might opt to play out the final year of his contract and explore free agency in the NFL next March.
For Dallas, the main question revolves around whether owner Jerry Jones and his team believe Prescott, who was the runner-up for NFL MVP, can lead them to a Super Bowl victory. However, their playoff performance under Prescott paints a different picture.
The Cowboys also need to consider the quarterback market going forward and evaluate if they can find a better option than Prescott in the next offseason. At this stage, it seems unlikely. Although there were rumors linking Dallas to potential quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft as Prescott’s successor, the team ultimately didn’t select any. Prescott mentioned, “Not necessarily,” when asked if there had been progress in negotiations, emphasizing that communication has been ongoing but without significant advancement.
Effective communication is crucial, but without tangible progress in negotiations, speculation will continue to mount regarding the future of the Prescott-Cowboys partnership.
Regarding Prescott’s response to Jones’ previous comments, Jones stated back in April that he doesn’t intend to set the quarterback market with a new deal for Prescott but rather to adapt to the changing market conditions. This approach adds further complexity to the situation.
With quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins up for extensions this offseason, and San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy eligible for his first extension next year, the landscape of quarterback contracts is evolving rapidly.
In essence, the longer this negotiation process persists, the more likely it becomes that Prescott could depart from the Cowboys after the upcoming season.
