BREAKING: Guardians to place her professional key player on injured list and recall prospect, another veteran as a replacement.

Cleveland’s leadoff batter, Steven Kwan, is sidelined with a hamstring injury, prompting the team to bring up top prospect Kyle Manzardo, according to a source familiar with the decision. Kwan, currently leading the AL in batting, underwent an MRI after leaving Saturday’s game due to tightness. Although the team has received the MRI results and plans to place Kwan on the 10-day IL, official roster moves won’t be made until Monday ahead of a series against Detroit.

This injury creates an opportunity for the Guardians to introduce Manzardo, known for his powerful hitting, into the lineup. Acquired from Tampa Bay last year, Manzardo has impressed at Triple-A Columbus, hitting eight homers and driving in 14 runs over the last 14 games. Despite initially starting the season in Triple-A to allow for further development, the 23-year-old’s performance has convinced the Guardians that he’s ready for the majors.

The team’s president of baseball operations, Chris Antonetti, expressed confidence in Manzardo’s abilities, particularly against left-handed pitching, and highlighted his improvements defensively. Manzardo is expected to primarily serve as the designated hitter while also providing backup at first base for Josh Naylor.

Kwan’s absence is significant for the Guardians, as the two-time Gold Glove winner has been one of baseball’s top hitters this season, boasting a .353 batting average with a league-leading 47 hits and 28 runs scored before his injury.
