When it rains, it pours. Following a sluggish start in recruiting from the transfer portal, the Virginia Cavaliers have secured four commitments in just three days. One day after gaining commitments from former Duke forward TJ Power and San Diego State forward Elijah Saunders, the ‘Hoos added Carter Lang, a Charlottesville native and former Vanderbilt forward, to their ranks.
Lang, standing at 6’9″ and a rising sophomore, is reportedly joining as a walk-on with three years of eligibility still ahead. He was a highly regarded ESPN four-star recruit, ranked as the fifth-best player in Virginia when he graduated from St. Anne’s-Belfield. Lang boasted impressive stats at STAB, averaging 18.3 points and 14.9 rebounds with a 58.3% shooting rate.
While at Vanderbilt last season, Lang started in seven games but had modest averages of 1.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in 11.5 minutes. He entered the transfer portal on April 5th, following the appointment of new head coach Mark Byington. Despite the recent influx of frontcourt players, Lang will have to vie for playing time, though his imposing 6’9″, 235-pound physique immediately distinguishes him as one of the team’s most physically dominant players, alongside returning sophomore forward Blake Buchanan.
Thus far, Tony Bennett and his team have completed a transfer class featuring former McDonald’s All-American nominee forward Jalen Worley, former five-star recruit forward TJ Power, and forward Elijah Saunders. Notably, a prevalent trend among these transfers is that three out of four have at least two years of eligibility remaining, which nicely complements the team’s existing youthful roster.
