Tuesday morning saw another NFL team make a significant move in the wide receiver department as the Buffalo Bills finalized a deal with veteran player Scantling. Interestingly, the New Orleans Saints had also expressed interest in acquiring MVS earlier in the offseason.
It’s worth questioning the extent of New Orleans’ pursuit of MVS, given their satisfaction with A.T. Perry’s performance last season and their early interest in draft prospect Bub Means, whom they picked up on day three. Means is anticipated to provide additional size and skill to the Saints’ passing game, having impressed at the recent rookie minicamp.
While the exact level of investment New Orleans was willing to make in MVS remains uncertain, there’s an argument that the team’s resources could be allocated more effectively elsewhere, particularly towards bolstering safety and interior defensive line depth, two areas where veteran expertise could be beneficial.
With MVS now bound for the AFC, the Saints had already augmented their wide receiver corps with several veteran signings in free agency prior to the draft. The competition for roster spots among these additions will be fierce, with Cedrick Wilson Jr. currently appearing to be the safest bet for securing a place on the team at the start of the season. Both Stanley Morgan Jr. and Equanimeous St. Brown will face stiff competition during training camp to secure their positions.
Expectations for Perry and Means might be higher within the Saints organization than among some fans, and their performances this season will determine whether the team’s confidence in them is justified.
