During a spring training game at Fort Lauderdale Stadium on February 25, 2009, New York Mets helmets rested on the ground as the Mets faced off against the Baltimore Orioles. At that time, the Mets had utilized Joey Wendle as a backup infielder. However, aiming to boost their offensive performance, they’ve opted to remove Wendle from the roster and provide more opportunities to Mark Vientos, who will share third base duties with Brett Baty.
SNY Mets tweeted, “The Mets have designated Joey Wendle for assignment,” marking a shift in the team’s strategy. Wendle, known for his versatility across the infield, had been struggling offensively, prompting the Mets to prioritize other options. Despite signing him to a one-year deal in the offseason, the Mets chose to part ways with Wendle, who had not demonstrated consistent offensive prowess since his time with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021.
Although Wendle may consider staying with the Mets as Triple-A insurance, there remains potential for him to re-enter the MLB in another capacity. Meanwhile, the Mets are affording the younger Vientos the opportunity to showcase his potential while addressing their roster needs.
