Another top Montreal star confirmed Departure

The Montreal Canadiens’ season ended disappointingly as anticipated, leaving fans hopeful that the Habs’ affiliate, the Laval Rocket, would at least secure a playoff berth. However, the Rocket also faced a dismal season, finishing 6th in their division and missing the playoffs. This outcome was unexpected given the talent under coach Jean-François Houle’s guidance. Consequently, speculation arose regarding potential coaching changes.

Part of this speculation has now been addressed with the announcement that assistant coach Kelly Buchberger will not return for the next season. Buchberger, who served as an assistant since the 2021-2022 season, has opted to join the Devon Xtreme in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. His departure leaves a void on the Rocket’s coaching staff, likely prompting adjustments.

The impact of Buchberger’s exit on other coaches, particularly head coach Jean-François Houle and assistant coach Martin Laperrière, remains uncertain. While Houle’s contract status for the upcoming season is uncertain, his desire to continue with the Rocket is evident. Amidst a disappointing season, speculation persists about the futures of Houle and Laperrière.

One theory suggests that Buchberger anticipated potential changes within the coaching staff and proactively sought a new opportunity, perhaps avoiding termination. However, only time will reveal whether Houle and Laperrière will remain in their roles for the 2024-2025 season.
