A little over a month ago, the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team faced a grim situation for the 2024-25 season due to numerous departures. Head coach Mike Young and his team have been diligently navigating the transfer portal to rebuild the roster.
Although the roster construction has been gradual, Young secured a commitment on Saturday night from Jaden Schutt, a transfer from Duke, for the upcoming season. As reported by Joe Tipton of On3 Sports, Schutt, a sharpshooter who redshirted the previous season at Duke, made the decision to join Virginia Tech. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 190 pounds, Schutt was ranked as the No.
66 player by On3 Industry Rankings in the Class of 2022, initially committing to Duke in September 2021. Hailing from Yorkville, Illinois, Schutt, who was named Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022, opted for Virginia Tech over several other prominent schools.
Virginia Tech had recently faced a scarcity of scholarship players, but through the efforts of Young and his staff, a promising and distinctly different roster has been assembled. Notably, recent additions include Ben Burnham from the College of Charleston, Rodney Brown Jr. from California, Hysier Miller from Temple, Tobi Lawal from VCU, along with high school standout Ben Hammond and Schutt.
With one scholarship remaining, it’s anticipated that Young will utilize it to fill the void left by Jordan Ivy-Curry, who de-committed from Virginia Tech and committed to Central Florida in the Big 12 Conference.
