With the 81st pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks opted for Christian Haynes, a right guard from UConn. The team had a pressing need at guard due to the departures of Damien Lewis and Phil Haynes in free agency. Although last year’s fourth-round pick, Anthony Bradford, performed decently in his rookie season, allowing only one sack, Seattle still aimed to bolster the interior offensive line after previously selecting two offensive tackles, Charles Cross and Abe Lucas, in 2022.
Haynes, while not yet a fully refined player, brings certain strengths to his game that warrant attention. He displays a gritty style of play, characterized by relentless blocking efforts even after the whistle blows, often aiming to overpower opponents by forcing them to the ground during plays. His performance in one-on-one drills during the Senior Bowl practice demonstrates this aggressive approach.
In terms of the run game, Haynes shows promise, particularly in executing reach and seal blocks, though he still has areas to refine. He exhibits the strength to move defenders, creating running lanes between the tackles, and demonstrates adept shoulder positioning to maximize effectiveness. Despite not being exceptionally forceful in his blocks, he possesses enough power to redirect defensive linemen away from run lanes.
In pass protection, Haynes may yield ground initially against bull rushes but quickly stabilizes and utilizes his flexible upper body to maintain positioning and strength. His experience as a four-year starter contributes to his ability to handle stunts and twists effectively, remaining patient and composed instead of becoming overly aggressive. While lacking elite athleticism, he compensates with solid open-field angles, enabling him to contribute effectively in screen plays and second-level blocking situations.
