Miami Heat may prefer the coveted 5-star player’s trade over contract extension this summer

Trading for Jimmy Butler has been a smart move for the Miami Heat, but despite making it to the NBA Finals twice in five seasons, many in Miami feel he hasn’t fulfilled his expectations.

As Butler approaches 35 before the 2024-25 NBA season begins, he anticipates a maximum contract extension offer from the Heat this summer.

However, there’s uncertainty whether Miami will extend such an offer, with reports suggesting they might be more inclined to trade Butler rather than commit to another significant contract.

While Butler is currently set to earn $48.7 million next season, he’s expected to become a free agent afterward unless his performance declines or he faces more durability issues.

Despite his contributions to the team, Butler has struggled with injuries, missing a significant number of games, including the entire postseason this past year. The Heat have been seeking a third star to complement Bam Adebayo and Butler, but they might see Butler as their most valuable trade asset and pursue a superstar through trade instead.
