Buffalo Bills linebacker Matt Milano earned All-Pro honors in 2022 and seemed poised for another standout season in 2023 until he was sidelined by injury. Milano suffered a fractured leg in Week 5, ending his season prematurely and requiring an extensive rehabilitation process.
While the team anticipates Milano’s return for the 2024 season, there are concerns about his ability to perform at his previous level, prompting suggestions that the Bills consider adding another veteran linebacker as insurance.
One analyst, Matt Holder from Bleacher Report, recommended this move, highlighting the potential decline in Milano’s performance due to his age and injury history. Additionally, Holder noted that the departure of Tyrel Dodson, who filled in effectively for Milano, in free agency leaves a gap in the linebacker corps.
Holder proposed Shaquille Leonard as a possible solution, describing him as an “insurance policy” for Milano. Despite Leonard’s recent struggles, including a career-low season and contemplation of retirement due to injuries, he could offer valuable veteran leadership if he decides to continue playing.
Leonard’s experience could be particularly beneficial to the Bills, who have undergone significant changes on defense with the departures of key players like Tre’Davious White and Jordan Poyer.
In addition to potential veteran signings, the Bills have also addressed their linebacker depth by selecting Washington linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio in the fifth round of the draft. Ulofoshio is expected to contribute primarily on special teams initially, showcasing his abilities in coverage and forcing turnovers during his collegiate career.
