Approved in: Another devoted sensational player set to land commitment with virginia tech

Shortly after taking over as the new women’s basketball coach at Virginia Tech, Megan Duffy wasted no time in launching her recruitment efforts. Among her prospects was Katie Sears, a highly skilled point guard from North Carolina who had received numerous Division 1 offers.

On Monday night, Sears announced her commitment to Virginia Tech and Megan Duffy. Sears, hailing from Boone, N.C., and attending Watauga High School, chose Virginia Tech over several other prominent schools, including Boston College, Wake Forest, Purdue, Clemson, Marquette, Michigan, James Madison, and Kansas.

According to Prep Girls Hoop, Sears is ranked as the No. 2 player in North Carolina’s Class of 2025. Standing at 5 feet 9 inches tall, the junior averaged an impressive 30 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists per game, earning her third conference Player of the Year award.

Sears, who played for Team Curry in AAU, marks the first commitment Duffy has secured for the Class of 2025, signaling her early impact on the program. Sears personally delivered the good news to Duffy by visiting her office after her announcement on X.

While the composition of the 2025-26 Virginia Tech roster, which currently includes Sears along with other players such as Carleigh Wenzel, Samyha Suffren, and Mackenzie Nelson, is subject to change due to the transfer portal, Duffy’s initial efforts in assembling her future lineup in Blacksburg appear promising.
