Now official: Virginia tech commit with one of the most talented star

It’s been close to two months since Megan Duffy assumed leadership of the Virginia Tech women’s basketball program following Kenny Brooks’ departure for Kentucky shortly after Baylor knocked the Hokies out of the 2024 NCAA Tournament in the second round.

Since her arrival in Blacksburg, Duffy has managed to retain some players who opted to stay after Brooks left. However, on Monday night, she made her first significant move since taking over the program.

Katie Sears’ decision to commit marks Megan Duffy’s initial triumph at Virginia Tech. Duffy secured her first commitment for the Class of 2025 when Sears pledged to join the Hokies. Over the past three years, Sears has been the standout player at Watauga High School, earning the title of conference Player of the Year while averaging impressive stats of 30 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists per game. She notably scored 38 points in a state semifinal game.

Ranked as the second-best player in North Carolina by Prep Girls Basketball, Sears visited Virginia Tech at the end of April and opted to turn down offers from several other Division 1 schools to play under Duffy.

This marks an important milestone for Duffy in shaping the Virginia Tech program. With a successful recruiting background at Marquette, she’s off to a promising start at Virginia Tech. Sears’ commitment is significant as it steers her away from all three in-state schools – North Carolina, Duke, and North Carolina State – as well as Clemson, where she also had an offer.

Recruitment efforts will intensify over the summer for the Class of 2025, and Duffy is actively building a roster for the upcoming years. Sears’ commitment is just the beginning, with more likely to follow.
