UVA Lands Another Commitment of a Top Experienced Star

After experiencing difficulties with midfield production last season, head coach Lars Tiffany has swiftly addressed the issue by recruiting two promising midfielders early in the transfer window.

Charles Balsamo, formerly of Duke and ranked seventh overall in the National Lacrosse Federation’s class of 2022, has reportedly joined the Virginia Cavaliers. His arrival reunites him with former club teammate Joey Terenzi, as first reported by Matt Chandik.

Balsamo had an impressive freshman year, contributing 31 points from the first midfield line. However, his output declined after being moved to the second midfield line last season, finishing with 16 points and 10 turnovers in both years.

This acquisition follows the recent addition of left-handed midfielder Johnny Hackett, formerly of Bryant and the 2023 America East Rookie of the Year. Like Hackett, the 5’8” Balsamo offers versatility, capable of playing attack and frequently dodging behind the cage despite primarily operating as a midfielder.

Report: Duke Midfielder Charles Balsamo Transferring to Virginia Lacrosse

With these early transfer moves, Virginia now boasts a midfield lineup comprising Hackett, Griffin Schutz, Ryan Colsey, Truitt Sunderland, Terenzi, and incoming recruit Hudson Hausmann, ranked sixth overall in Prep Lacrosse.

The assumption is that Jack Boyden will return for another year and potentially transition to attack. Sunderland, who has previously played attack for Virginia, could also consider a position change.

Both Balsamo and Hackett have two years of eligibility remaining, adding depth and talent to the Cavaliers’ roster.
