Rutgers secured its top-rated recruit of the class with the commitment of four-star offensive lineman , who announced his decision on Tuesday. The New Jersey native opted for Rutgers over offers from Georgia, Tennessee, and Miami.
Matthews, currently positioned at No. 93 in ESPN’s 300, holds the No. 2 spot among players in New Jersey and ranks 14th among offensive tackles nationwide.
Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds, Matthews has swiftly emerged as one of the top linemen in New Jersey, boasting exceptional athleticism and agility, making him a coveted prospect for the Big Ten conference.
His decision ceremony took place at Toms River North, featuring special guests MLB All-Star and Rutgers alum Todd Frazier, along with UFC legend Frankie Edgar, who presented a pizza bearing the letter “R.”
Initially committing to Penn State in January 2023, Matthews withdrew his commitment in September, reopening his recruitment. Despite considering Georgia among his top choices, he ultimately opted to stay close to home and join Rutgers.
