Bralyn Lux set to be critical figure in Texas Tech secondary this season

The 2024 Texas Tech football team faces a critical inquiry regarding their secondary. Departures of key 2023 starters like Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Tyler Owens, Rayshad Williams, and Malik Dunlap have opened significant gaps to be filled.

Bralyn Lux, a super-senior, emerges as a vital figure for leadership and experience in the secondary. Transitioning from a third starting corner last season, Lux’s role becomes paramount for the defense this year.

In his debut year with the Red Raiders, Lux showcased promise, featuring in 12 games with eight starts. His impact was notable, ranking seventh in total tackles and leading the team with nine pass breakups.

However, the upcoming season presents new challenges. As Tech’s primary corner, Lux may confront top-tier wide receivers each game, given the formidable pass-catching talent in the Big 12.

The lack of experience among other cornerbacks like Jalon Peoples and Maurion Horn underscores Lux’s significance. With only 13 combined college appearances, Lux’s 39-game experience between Tech and Fresno State positions him as a dependable asset.

Yet, doubts linger regarding Lux’s ability to consistently handle elite receivers, especially after struggles against Oregon’s Troy Franklin last season. Despite occasional setbacks, Lux’s emergence from an unheralded recruit to a contributor reflects his potential.

However, entrusting Lux as the top corner represents a considerable leap, given his modest beginnings and limited experience. Despite being underrated out of California high school, Lux’s progression, especially in the 2023 season, suggests he possesses the grit and skills to thrive in the competitive Big 12.

As the 2024 season approaches, Lux’s capability to assume the role of a top-end corner remains a pivotal question for Joey McGuire’s defensive strategy.
