Sophia Smith, a standout on the U.S. women’s national soccer team, has announced her engagement to Michael Wilson, a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. They shared their news on social media, posting several photos along with the caption: “Forever always meant with you.”
Smith and Wilson first crossed paths at Stanford, where Smith excelled for two seasons before leaving early to become the top pick in the 2020 NWSL draft. Wilson also made his mark at Stanford, playing five seasons for the Cardinal football team.
Since then, Smith has become one of the most prominent figures in American soccer, achieving MVP honors and winning an NWSL championship with the Portland Thorns, in addition to her role with the U.S. women’s national team.
Wilson recently completed his rookie season with the Cardinals, having been selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The 24-year-old had an impressive debut, tallying 38 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns.
Earlier this year, Smith discussed the challenges of maintaining a long-distance relationship on “The Women’s Game” podcast with former USWNT teammate Sam Mewis. She acknowledged the difficulties but expressed joy in witnessing Wilson pursue his dreams, even while they both navigate demanding careers.
