Four-star QB commit Tramell Jones Jr. has his eyes on three highly-touted prospects for the Seminoles.
Florida State football has bolstered its 2025 recruiting class with the addition of four-star quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. from Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida. Jones Jr., who committed to the Seminoles in April 2023, is currently showcasing his skills at the Elite 11 Finals in California this week. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he ranks as the 24th-best quarterback prospect.
Despite his commitment to Florida State, there have been speculations about Jones Jr. showing interest in the rival Florida Gators. Although he hasn’t scheduled an official visit to Gainesville yet, it’s anticipated that he may make an unofficial trip to ensure he’s making the best decision for his future.
“We get the ball to playmakers in space. We let you guys work. I’m the point guard on the field.”

Recruiting in college football is dynamic, often involving teenagers navigating one of the most significant decisions of their lives. Jones Jr. recently discussed his recruiting efforts with 247Sports’ Tom Loy, particularly focusing on three prospects he’s actively recruiting.
Five-star offensive lineman Josh Petty, four-star running back Byron Louis, and four-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III are high-priority targets for the Seminoles. Let’s go ahead and break down each of the recruiut
FIVE-STAR OL JOSH PETTY
Florida State already has an offensive lineman committed to their 2025 recruiting class in five-star interior offensive lineman Solomon Thomas from Raines High School in Jacksonville, Florida.
Thomas has been committed to the program since December. However, he has flirted with the likes of Florida and LSU and his recruitment remains up in the air. We all know that assistant coach Alex Atkins is one of the better recruiters on the coaching staff and has a way of relating to prospects and transfers.
With that being said, I want to turn the attention to five-star offensive tackle Josh Petty from Fellowship Christian School in Roswell, Georgia. He has already received a crystal ball prediction in favor of Florida State. Plus, he is officially visiting the Seminoles this upcoming weekend.
Not to mention that his sister is supposed to be attending school in Tallahassee during the fall so it could be a high comfort level for him and his family members. I expect the Seminoles to have a great chance to land him soon.
I’m mentioning Surtain Sr. in the context of discussing a running back prospect because of his significant ties to American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida, where the four-star running back target Byron Louis currently plays. Surtain Sr. previously served as the head football coach at American Heritage, allowing him to maintain strong relationships with recruits like Louis, who are part of the 2025 class.
Even though running backs coach David Johnson is primarily responsible for recruiting Louis, having Surtain Sr. as a familiar face within the program adds an extra layer of connection and trust for the recruit. Louis is considered one of Florida State’s top targets at the running back position. Initially thought to favor Ohio State, the Seminoles have positioned themselves well, evidenced by Louis scheduling an official visit on June 21st.
FOUR-STAR RB BYRON LOUIS
Florida State football is thankful for the hiring of defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. He has made his presence known on the football field as well as the recruiting trail.
However, why am I mentioning Surtain Sr. when discussing a running back prospect? Well for starters, four-star running back target Byron Louis is from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. For those who did not know, Surtain Sr. used to be the head football coach at American Heritage High School.
This has allowed him to have lasting relationships even with the 2025 recruits. Even though running backs coach David Johnson is the primary recruiter, it helps to have Surtain Sr. has a familiar face within the program.
Louis is one of the Seminoles’ top targets at the position. He was once thought to be leaning toward Ohio State, but Florida State seems to be in a pole position with having an official visit scheduled on June 21st
FOUR-STAR WR VERNELL BROWN III
Florida State must still locate playmakers so the talented signal-caller can throw the football. The Seminoles were once leading for five-star wide receiver Jaime Ffrench Jr., but that recruitment has shifted in a completely different direction for the Seminoles.
However, their target board has expanded to other pass-catchers such as four-star playmaker Daylan McCutcheon. With that being said, Tramell Jones Jr. decided to mention his 7v7 teammate from SouthFloridaExpress, four-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III, first.
Brown III was originally trending to Ohio State, but that has slowly shifted to the attention of Florida and Florida State. He is a Florida legacy with his father playing with the Gators in the early 2000’s. However, Florida State is giving themselves a shot when the Orlando native is officially visiting the Seminoles this weekend.
Overall, I think the Seminoles have been given a chance to be successful and I believe that this is a perfect opportunity to take a legacy recruit from an arch-rival that could struggle in 2024 with one of the more difficult schedules in all of college football.
