The Green Bay Packers have bolstered their defensive roster in recent years, and veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander could be an interesting addition to their unit before training camp begins.
In a recent article on Bleacher Report, Alex Ballentine highlighted several free agents the Packers should consider signing, including offensive lineman Greg Van Roten and safety Jayron Kearse. Ballentine pointed out that Alexander would make sense due to the Packers’ shift to a 4-3 base defense under Jeff Hafley, which favors off-ball linebackers. Alexander, still under 30 and offering valuable experience, could provide depth and injury insurance while allowing younger players to develop at their own pace.
Adding another off-ball linebacker could provide the Packers with greater depth at the position, ensuring flexibility heading into the season. Despite Alexander not reaching his peak form in recent years, his veteran presence and NFL pedigree make him an intriguing prospect for Green Bay.
Alexander entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of LSU in 2015 and quickly made an impact with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, leading the NFL in solo tackles in 2016 and earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2017. After a strong start, he signed a lucrative contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2019 but has since battled injuries, including a significant Achilles injury suffered against the Packers.
While his availability remains uncertain, Alexander could potentially be a valuable addition to the Packers’ linebacker corps if he can regain his health and contribute effectively. With established linebackers like Quay Walker and Isaiah McDuffie already in the fold, along with promising rookies like Edgerrin Cooper and Ty’Ron Hopper drafted this year, Green Bay’s defense has the potential to be a formidable unit under new coordinator Jeff Hafley’s guidance.
