Texas tech confirms the signing of another top star

Texas Tech secured a commitment from Kaleb Burns, a three-star linebacker for the 2025 class. Burns, standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 220 pounds, announced his decision on social media following an official visit on June 14. Hailing from Cy Falls High School in Houston, Burns opted for Texas Tech over offers from numerous other schools, including Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, and others.

Initially expected to join SMU, Burns changed course after his visit to Texas Tech left a strong impression. Reflecting on his visit, Burns shared that interacting with the coaching staff and experiencing Lubbock firsthand were highlights, particularly enjoying time spent with current players.

This commitment marks the second linebacker addition for Texas Tech in the 2025 recruiting cycle, joining Brock Golwas from Flower Mound, TX. Burns becomes the 17th commitment overall for the class, contributing to Texas Tech’s current national ranking of 30th and fifth in the Big 12.

Looking ahead, Texas Tech’s head coach Joey McGuire outlined plans to recruit between 18 to 20 high school players for the 2025 class. He emphasized the team’s strategy to build a robust roster foundation with players entering their third and fourth years in college.

Burns holds a national ranking as the 510th overall player, 54th linebacker nationally, and 81st in Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite. His athleticism and playmaking abilities are noted, having excelled with 73 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, one interception, and two forced fumbles during his last season at Cy Falls. Burns also showcased his versatility in track and field events.

Regarding his playing style, Burns describes himself as a dynamic playmaker with speed and the ability to read the game effectively. Texas Tech’s coaching staff has discussed utilizing Burns either as a Will linebacker or potentially at the Star position, a hybrid role combining linebacker and safety duties.
