Cole Woodson, a three-star cornerback from Virginia committed to Pittsburgh Monday night over the Hokies and other schools.
In the realm of college football recruiting, success often comes with setbacks. Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and his team have experienced a recent surge in commitments, though they faced a setback this week when in-state recruit Cole Woodson chose ACC rival Pittsburgh over them.
Just hours after securing four-star wide receiver Matthew Outten from Portsmouth, Woodson, a three-star defensive back with Virginia Tech among his top choices, announced his commitment to Pittsburgh on Monday night.
Woodson opted for the Panthers over offers from Connecticut, Duke, JMU, Minnesota, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and West Virginia. His decision is a significant win for Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi, who successfully recruited him away from several ACC competitors.
Ranked as the 56th-best safety by 247Sports and the 37th-ranked recruit in Virginia by Rivals, Woodson visited Blacksburg on June 17 following a visit to Pittsburgh. His final visits to Virginia concluded on June 20, leading to his commitment announcement on Monday night.
Virginia Tech currently boasts 14 commitments for the Class of 2025, with 10 hailing from Virginia. While they have a strong defensive recruitment profile, missing out on Woodson is notable, given his potential fit in Chris Marve’s secondary.
Despite this setback, Pry has demonstrated adeptness in rebuilding Virginia ties swiftly in recruiting. The class includes commitments like Knahlij Harrell from Green Run at cornerback and Sheldon Robinson from Woodberry Forest at safety.
