Hard Knocks revealed why Giants let Saquon Barkley go in NFL free agency

Most likely, you’re familiar with NFL Films’ “Hard Knocks,” a documentary series that tracks a team through training camp and the preseason, ending just as the regular season starts.

Recently, NFL Films introduced an in-season version of the show, which follows teams throughout the NFL season, focusing on the New York Giants in its latest iteration. This version delves into the Giants’ offseason preparations, including staff and team assembly, offering viewers a unique behind-the-scenes look.

If you’re a seasoned viewer of “Hard Knocks,” much of the format and pacing will feel familiar. The show typically avoids breaking news, saving significant developments for subsequent episodes. This holds true for the Giants, whose offseason moves—like not extending running back Saquon Barkley—set the stage for dramatic decisions.

New York Giants v Minnesota Vikings

Barkley, drafted second overall in 2018, played under the franchise tag in 2023. This offseason, the Giants faced a critical decision regarding his future, ultimately watching him depart to division rival Philadelphia Eagles in free agency.

The debut episode focuses significantly on this decision, culminating in a pivotal conversation led by Giants GM Joe Schoen. Schoen and his team debate the implications of Barkley’s departure on the team’s offensive identity and the role of quarterback Daniel Jones.

Looking back, Schoen’s foresight was spot-on: the Giants subsequently bolstered their offensive line through free agency and selected LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As someone who follows the Dallas Cowboys closely, I’ve often found amusement in critiquing the Giants’ decisions over the years. However, objectively speaking, they made reasonable choices in prioritizing the quarterback and adapting their offensive strategy.

While skeptics may ridicule the Giants’ moves, particularly given Howie Roseman’s reputation as Eagles GM, the Giants finally faced a tough decision they had postponed for too long. In the competitive world of the NFL, such decisions are often necessary for long-term success.
