Mike Young gets a huge Class of 2025 commitment from a four-star center Christian Gurdak.
On Monday night, Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young was anticipating news from a highly-rated small forward regarding his college decision. Ultimately, Jaylen Harrell, from CATS Academy in Braintree, Mass., chose to stay in New England and commit to Kim English at Providence.
The following Tuesday afternoon, Virginia Tech secured a commitment from another four-star recruit, this time in their favor, as talented big man Christian Gurdak announced his commitment to the Hokies for the Class of 2025.
In the previous month, Gurdak had visited Blacksburg officially before traveling to South Bend, Indiana to consider Notre Dame. Ultimately, the 6-foot-9 center, who will start his senior season this fall at Gonzaga High School (DC), opted for Virginia Tech over Notre Dame, Maryland, Iowa, Clemson, and other suitors.
Ranked 98th nationally by 247Sports and fourth in his position in Washington D.C., Gurdak marks the second Top 100 recruit in as many years that Coach Young has successfully recruited, following Ryan Jones who chose Virginia Tech over his local team, the Florida Gators.
Gurdak joins Sin’Cere Jones from Portsmouth, Va. as Virginia Tech’s second commitment for the Class of 2025, giving Young a strong foundation with a center and power forward already secured. This sets a positive trajectory for the team’s future as they now focus on recruiting wings and guards to round out their roster.
Virginia Tech identified Gurdak early, offering him a scholarship when he was just 14 years old, highlighting his long-standing status as a priority recruit for the program.
