The New York Rangers announced on Saturday that defenseman Braden Schneider has agreed to a two-year contract. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the deal is valued at $2.2 million per season.
Schneider, 22 years old, had a productive season last year, scoring five goals and 14 assists for a total of 19 points in 82 regular-season games. He also logged 16 penalty minutes while averaging 15:54 of ice time per game.
Drafted 19th overall by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Schneider spent part of the 2021-22 season with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, tallying nine assists in 24 games before being called up to the NHL, where he played half of the season with the big club.

Since then, Schneider has been a regular fixture in the Rangers’ lineup, missing just one regular-season game over two seasons. In his NHL career thus far, he has amassed 12 goals and 36 assists for a total of 48 points in 206 games, maintaining an average ice time of 15:44.
Internationally, Schneider has represented Canada at various levels, including the World Championships and World Junior Championships, where he won gold and silver medals respectively. He also earned a gold medal with Canada’s Under-18 team at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
Last season, the Rangers had an impressive record of 55-23-4, finishing first in the Metropolitan Division and securing the Presidents’ Trophy for the best regular-season record in the NHL. Forward Artemi Panarin led the team with 120 points, while defenseman Adam Fox contributed 73 points. In goal, Igor Shesterkin posted a 36-17-2 record with a .913 save percentage and 2.58 goals against average, supported by backup Jonathan Quick’s strong performance.
