Over the weekend, the Rangers solidified their roster by signing Braden Schneider, leaving just two restricted free agents awaiting new contracts. The team has now agreed to terms with defenseman Matthew Robertson on a one-year deal.
Selected 49th overall by the Rangers in the 2019 draft, Robertson has been highly regarded within the organization as one of their top prospects. As he wraps up his entry-level contract this season, Robertson has accumulated 55 points over three seasons with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
While his point production dipped slightly this season compared to previous years, Robertson remained a consistent presence on Hartford’s blue line. He finished the season among their top offensive defensemen, ranking third in assists, points, and tied for third in goals.

Robertson’s path to the NHL with the Rangers hasn’t been as straightforward as initially hoped when he was drafted. However, his re-signing is crucial for Hartford, which has limited defensive depth. This extension provides the Rangers with another option for call-ups as needed, while Robertson will have another season to prove himself with the Wolf Pack.
Given the one-year term of the deal, this contract could serve as a “prove-it” opportunity for Robertson’s future in New York. His development has been closely watched, especially after Brandon Scanlin made his NHL debut ahead of Robertson last season, seemingly advancing in the depth chart.
Despite the challenges, there’s optimism that Robertson can rebound in Hartford and take the next step in his career progression as anticipated by many.
