Robbie Hyde of Bleacher Report has suggested a trade scenario that would bring 2022 Miami Marlins All-Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. to Los Angeles.
Hyde’s proposed swap involves the Dodgers acquiring Jazz Chisholm Jr., with the Marlins receiving outfielder James Outman, catcher Diego Cartaya, and right-handed pitcher Payton Martin. Chisholm, aware of trade rumors, remains focused on playing baseball until any deal materializes.
Chisholm isn’t just a short-term acquisition; he’s eligible for arbitration for two more seasons. His versatility and solid performance make him a valuable addition to any team seeking infield depth.

In Hyde’s proposal, the Dodgers would part with Outman, Cartaya (ranked seventh in the organization and the second-best catching prospect), and Martin (ranked ninth). Outman made his MLB debut in 2021 and has shown promise with a .248/.353/.437 slash line during his first full season in 2022.
Chisholm, originally a shortstop in the minors, has experience at second base and outfield, making him adaptable to various defensive needs. His offensive stats, including a .249/.321/.407 slash line with 18 stolen bases and 12 home runs this season, indicate a potential upgrade over Lux for the Dodgers.
Dodgers Infield Situation
The Dodgers made the decision to transition Mookie Betts to shortstop at the start of this season. However, Betts has faced challenges defensively, ranking in the 10th percentile for outs above average with a minus-4 rating. Last season, while playing second base, Betts performed slightly better, ranking in the 16th percentile. If the Dodgers opt to move Betts back to second base, acquiring Jazz Chisholm would facilitate this transition.
Chisholm’s Trade Interest
Chisholm’s background includes primarily playing as a shortstop in the minor leagues and regularly playing second base during his first three seasons in the majors. Starting in 2023, he began seeing playing time in the outfield. Currently, the Marlins have deployed Chisholm at second base to ensure his consistent presence in the lineup, as noted by manager Skip Schumaker on July 14.
While Chisholm is capable of playing shortstop, the Dodgers would likely prefer him at second base. Gavin Lux currently serves as the Dodgers’ primary second baseman but has struggled offensively with a .213/.267/.295 slash line this season. Chisholm represents a significant offensive upgrade, boasting a .249/.321/.407 slash line with 18 stolen bases and 12 home runs. His on-base percentage and batting average are comparable to his All-Star performance in 2022.
Despite some injury concerns in the past, Chisholm has had his healthiest season yet, playing in 90 of the Marlins’ 93 games this year. His all-around skills and versatility have attracted interest from multiple teams, including the Yankees.
The Marlins’ willingness to trade reflects their strategic focus on future potential amidst their current season’s challenges, as evidenced by their recent trade of Luis Arraez to the Padres.
