Detroit Confirms The Signing Of Another Devoted Key Man

According to Vancouver reporter Rick Dhaliwal, the Vancouver Canucks have reached an agreement with forward Daniel Sprong on a one-year contract worth $975,000 for the 2024-25 season.

Sprong, who hails from Amsterdam, Netherlands, had a productive season in 2023-24 with the Detroit Red Wings, scoring 18 goals and adding 25 assists for a total of 43 points in 76 games. The previous season, he played for the Seattle Kraken, achieving career highs with 21 goals, 25 assists, and 46 points in 66 games.

Over his eight-season NHL career, Sprong has amassed 85 goals and 74 assists, totaling 159 points in 344 regular-season games. His journey in the NHL has included stints with the Red Wings, Kraken, Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Sprong was selected by the Penguins in the second round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He initially joined the Penguins as an 18-year-old and split his early career between the NHL and the QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders, where he posted impressive numbers over four seasons.

His most notable AHL season was in 2017-18 with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where he tallied 32 goals and 33 assists in 65 games. Despite his AHL success, he struggled to solidify his NHL presence, leading to trades to the Ducks and Capitals before eventually joining the Kraken.

After a standout 2022-23 season, Sprong signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings before moving on to his current deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

In the 2023-24 season, the Canucks had a strong performance, finishing with a record of 50-23-9 and 109 points, winning the Pacific Division title for the first time since 2012-13. They advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs but were ultimately defeated by the Edmonton Oilers in seven games.
