Talbot believes Detroit is an ideal fit on and off the ice
During the 2024 NHL free agency period, goaltender Cam Talbot carefully considered his options, focusing primarily on what would be best for his family off the ice. Ultimately, he found what he was looking for with the Detroit Red Wings, signing a two-year contract on July 1.
In his introductory media Zoom call on July 2, Talbot expressed his satisfaction with the decision: “I seem to be part of (free agency) every summer. You never really get used to it, especially with kids and family now. There’s a lot more to think about – situations, term, length, all that stuff. Detroit really checked a lot of boxes for me.”
Talbot had a successful 2023-24 season with the Los Angeles Kings, posting a 27-20-6 record with a 2.50 goals-against average, .913 save percentage, and three shutouts in 54 games. He also earned his second
Reflecting on his performance, Talbot commented, “I thought I played pretty well. It was a healthy competition (with goalie David Rittich) to start the season.”
Originally signed by the New York Rangers in 2010, Talbot has had a notable career, compiling a 245-176-42 record with a 2.63 GAA, .914 save percentage, and 31 shutouts in 486 NHL games for various teams since the 2013-14 season.
Transitioning to a new team like Detroit presents challenges, especially adapting to a different system. Talbot mentioned his approach: “I usually come to the city three to four weeks before camp to try to skate with the guys as much as possible, get to know them as much as I can.”
Talbot is looking forward to settling in Detroit, where his wife has family ties. He remarked, “It will be nice to be close to family.”
With Detroit already having goaltenders Ville Husso, Alex Lyon, and James Reimer, and adding Jack Campbell in free agency, Talbot anticipates healthy competition: “There’s going to be a competition no matter what between the three or four of us. I feel healthy and good even at my age.”
Steve Yzerman, Red Wings’ Executive Vice President and General Manager, acknowledged the goaltending situation: “We brought in three goaltenders last year. Our goal wasn’t to go with three throughout the season. We debated initially on placing one of the goalies on waivers and ultimately waited.”
As they approach Training Camp, Yzerman added, “We’ll see how Ville’s health is in Training Camp. We expect him to be 100 percent and ready to go.”
The Red Wings are prepared for the challenges ahead, ready to make decisions as they navigate the upcoming season.
