Former South Carolina baseball star Whit Merrifield has signed a Major League contract with the Atlanta Braves.
Former South Carolina baseball star Whit Merrifield, now in his 9th year in Major League Baseball and 15th as a professional, boasts an impressive career record. He has been a three-time MLB All-Star, leading in hits twice, as well as in doubles, triples, and stolen bases three times each. Known for his versatility, Merrifield has been nominated for the Silver Slugger Award in multiple positions and has been a frequent nominee for the Gold Glove at second base.
However, 2024 has been challenging for Merrifield. After signing with the Philadelphia Phillies as a super utility player during the offseason, he struggled and was released just before the All-Star Game. Nevertheless, Merrifield quickly found a new opportunity, with ESPN’s Jeff Passan reporting that the Atlanta Braves signed him to a Major League contract on Monday morning.
His role in Atlanta remains uncertain. The injury to All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies has created an opening, although the Braves are considering promoting top prospect Nacho Alvarez, primarily an infielder. Additionally, the Braves have sought stability in the corner outfield and at shortstop this season, positions Merrifield can also fill. This versatility might see him playing time, especially if Alvarez takes on shortstop duties in place of Orlando Arcia.
In his collegiate career with South Carolina, Merrifield left a lasting mark. Despite playing for only three seasons before being drafted in 2010, he ranks in the top six in Gamecock history for hits and runs scored. His most iconic moment came in 2010, when his College World Series-clinching hit secured South Carolina’s first National Championship.
