Buffalo Bills sign safety Terrell Burgess to shore up injury-depleted position

Two safety signings in back-to-back days isn’t a great sign for the health of Mike Edwards and Cole Bishop

The Buffalo Bills are clearly focusing on shoring up their safety position as training camp continues. Adding Terrell Burgess just a day after signing veteran Kareem Jackson underscores the team’s need to solidify their secondary following several injury setbacks.

Rookie Cole Bishop’s recent injury, with his arm heavily wrapped, and the week-to-week status of Mike Edwards due to a hamstring injury, have intensified the need for depth in the safety group. Burgess, a 25-year-old with a modest but varied NFL background, is expected to see significant playing time during camp. His previous stops with the Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants, and Washington Commanders have provided him with valuable experience, though he’s only started four games in his career.

Burgess, a former third-round pick by the Rams in the 2020 NFL Draft, had a tough start to his career with an ankle injury that sidelined him for 11 games as a rookie. Last season with Washington, he contributed 120 defensive snaps and 25 tackles, alongside 273 special teams snaps, showing his versatility.

With the safety position now featuring nine players—Edwards, Bishop, Burgess, Taylor Rapp, Cam Lewis, Damar Hamlin, Dee Delaney, Kendall Williamson—the competition will be intense. The hope for the Bills is that Edwards and Bishop will recover quickly to help stabilize the group.

To accommodate Burgess, the Bills released rookie punter Jack Browning, making room for the new addition. The focus will now be on integrating Burgess and Jackson into the defensive schemes and evaluating their performance throughout the rest of camp and preseason.
