Breaking: Braves’ $16 million plan for Marcell Ozuna confirmed

Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos plans on keeping Marcell Ozuna around.

Atlanta Braves General Manager Alex Anthopoulos confirmed on Sunday that the team will retain MVP candidate Marcell Ozuna and exercise his $16 million option for next season. Following the acquisition of 2021 World Series MVP Jorge Soler at last week’s trade deadline, there was speculation about whether this move might signal the end of Ozuna’s time with the Braves. However, Anthopoulos strongly refuted these rumors during a press conference.

Anthopoulos explained, “In recent years, we’ve learned that having more than three outfielders is essential, especially with injuries being a common issue. Every season, we’ve needed additional bats, and it’s challenging to find players who combine on-base skills with power and a strong makeup.”

He added that Soler’s ability to play right field was a significant factor. “Some people think of corner outfield positions as interchangeable, but they’re not all the same. Many players are limited to left field due to a lack of arm strength. However, Jorge’s arm strength makes him a viable option for right field as well.”

The Braves are currently six games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the top spot in their division. Despite Sunday’s 7-0 shutout loss to the Miami Marlins, they remain half a game ahead of the San Diego Padres in the National League wild-card race. Braves reliever A.J. Minter emphasized the importance of focusing on the wild-card race over division titles.

Minter stated, “Honestly, our goal isn’t just to win the division or claim a flag. We play to win trophies and achieve ultimate success. So, we’re not too concerned with who leads the division. Congratulations to whoever wins the flag.”
