Texas Tech picked up a commitment from 2025 three-star defensive back Braylan McDonald, who was originally pledged to Washington State.
Texas Tech has secured a commitment from Braylan McDonald, a three-star defensive back from the class of 2025, who had previously been committed to Washington State. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound player from Lancaster, TX, decided to decommit from Washington State on Thursday and pledged to the Red Raiders the following day.
Texas Tech extended an offer to McDonald in February, and Inside the Red Raiders interviewed him about the opportunity to play for the team.
McDonald recounted the moment he received the offer: “It happened in my head coach’s office. Coach Leon Paul, a few recruits, and I went in to meet with Coach McGuire, and then we left for school. Shortly after, Coach Paul texted me to come back quickly. When I returned, Coach McGuire told me he loved my film and wanted me to join the Red Raiders. I was thrilled and said it sounded amazing.”

McDonald’s excitement was palpable, and he struggled to contain his enthusiasm when announcing the offer on social media.
He chose Texas Tech over offers from Boston College, Bowling Green, Texas State, UTEP, and Washington State. According to the 247Sports Composite, McDonald is ranked as the No. 1,407 player nationally, the No. 112 safety in the country, and the No. 204 prospect in Texas. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 112 safety in the nation and the No. 204 recruit in Texas.
McDonald described his skills: “I bring physicality, a high football IQ, leadership in tough situations, and confidence both on and off the field. You can rely on me to make a game-changing play or get a crucial stop. I’m also adaptable and can play any position needed.”
In addition to football, McDonald competes in track and is known for his versatility. When he was offered in February, it was for a defensive back position.
McDonald noted, “I wasn’t given specific details about the position, but I was told one reason for the offer was my ability to play nickel, strong safety, and free safety. It’s most likely I’ll play free safety.”
Texas Tech has confirmed that McDonald is projected to play safety, though his role could evolve once he joins the team.
