The Bills continue to juggle their linebacker group
The Buffalo Bills made two roster moves over the weekend, re-signing linebacker Shayne Simon while waiving defensive lineman David Ugwoegbu with an injury designation.
Simon, 24, originally joined the Bills this spring as an undrafted free agent. He had a solid college career at Pitt, recording 48 tackles in his final NCAA season. Standing 6’2″ and weighing 230 pounds, Simon has the physical attributes to compete as a professional linebacker, though his lack of production and athleticism make him a fringe roster player for Buffalo this summer.
With linebackers Nick Morrow (day-to-day with a core muscle/groin issue) and Edefuan Ulofoshio (unspecified rib injury) currently sidelined, and the team cautious about overloading Matt Milano as he recovers from a tibial plateau injury that ended his 2023 season, adding depth at linebacker is a logical move. The Bills are preparing to open their preseason in just four days, facing the Chicago Bears on August 10.
To accommodate Shayne Simon, the Bills waived defensive lineman David Ugwoegbu. Signed as a UDFA in 2024, Ugwoegbu was a college linebacker transitioning to an “edge” role but suffered a hip injury last week. He was waived with an injury designation, and after going unclaimed, he reverted to Buffalo’s Injured Reserve. This effectively ends his 2024 season unless the Bills decide to release him with an injury settlement.
