Yankees starting shortstop Anthony Volpe had a serious injury scare on Thursday night in the team’s 9–4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Volpe, who played 115 games this season so far, fouled a ball off his left foot, sending him tumbling to the ground. It was clear that he immediately felt pain, and the Yankees ended up pulling him from the game early for imaging
Fortunately, Volpe’s x-rays showed no serious damage, which is a relief. However, he might have a noticeable bruise that could linger for a few days. Considering the injury and the Yankees’ intent to rest him, it’s unlikely that Volpe will play on Friday. The team is set to face the Texas Rangers, and Oswaldo Cabrera may be shifted to shortstop to cover for him.
Fortunately, Volpe was in “good spirits,” as noted by manager Aaron Boone after the loss.
The Yankees Dodged a More Serious Injury
“He’s in pretty good spirits right now,” Boone said. “We’re treating it as a contusion. Hopefully, everything is alright, and he’s back out there.”
This season, Volpe has a batting line of .257/.304/.401, with 11 home runs, 45 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees’ young shortstop has been on fire, hitting .320 with a .587 slugging percentage, finally hitting his stride. This makes the timing of his injury particularly unfortunate.
Defensively, the 23-year-old has been exceptional, boasting a .974 fielding percentage, four defensive runs saved, and 12 outs above average. It’s anticipated that either Cabrera or Jazz Chisholm will take over at shortstop, with Cabrera being the more probable choice.
