Detroit Lions offensive lineman Connor Galvin is the latest player to lose his 2024 season to injury.
The Detroit Lions’ depth on the offensive line continues to face major setbacks. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that offensive tackle Connor Galvin suffered a torn MCL on Thursday night, necessitating season-ending surgery.
Galvin sustained the injury in the second half of the Lions’ preseason game against the New York Giants. He was unable to bear weight on his leg and had to be carted off the field.
This injury marks the second season-ending issue for the Lions’ backup offensive linemen. Previously, Netane Muti was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending shoulder injury. Additionally, rookie Christian Mahogany is still on the non-football illness list, Kevin Zeitler has had some time off, and Kayode Awosika has returned after missing a few practices.
Galvin had been competing for one of Detroit’s offensive tackle positions, vying for a backup role alongside Colby Sorsdal and Dan Skipper.
Unfortunately, Galvin wasn’t the only player injured during the preseason opener. Coach Dan Campbell reported that defensive tackle David Bada sustained a potentially serious Achilles injury. Quarterback Hendon Hooker and receiver Antoine Green both suffered concussions. Edge rusher James Houston is dealing with a bone bruise in his knee, safety Morice Norris has a hamstring issue, and defensive end Nate Lynn has a shoulder injury (and was reportedly carted off the field).
Campbell noted that only the injuries to Bada and Galvin are considered “long-term,” though he acknowledged that it’s difficult to determine the extent of concussions at this point.
The Lions will return to practice on Sunday, at which time we should have more information about the status of these injuries.
