With injuries severely impacting several position groups, the Detroit Lions have made another move to strengthen their defensive backfield.
On Wednesday, the Lions signed cornerback Javelin Guidry and waived injured safety Morice Norris. Norris, a Fresno State alum, had been performing well during training camp but suffered a hamstring injury, according to coach Dan Campbell.
Norris had been impressive in both the secondary and on special teams during his time with the Lions.
The Lions have been forced to bolster their cornerback depth due to a string of injuries. Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw both left practice on Monday, and Emmanuel Moseley is sidelined indefinitely with a torn pec.
Guidry has played 32 NFL games in his career, with five starts, accumulating 70 tackles, one tackle for loss, and three passes defensed. He has previously been with the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and Atlanta Falcons.
Undrafted in 2020, Guidry signed with the Jets and eventually made their final roster.
Additionally, the Lions added more depth to their secondary on Tuesday by signing Essang Bassey. Both Guidry and Bassey are expected to serve as organizational depth while the secondary recovers, with players like Arnold unlikely to participate in the preseason Week 2 game against Kansas City.
