Despite a number of injuries affecting both offense and defense, the Detroit Lions remain optimistic as they approach their season opener. Head coach Dan Campbell noted on Tuesday that the team anticipates the return of several injured players after Saturday’s preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Ford Field.
This group includes running back Jahmyr Gibbs, tight end Sam LaPorta, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler, and offensive tackle Dan Skipper. Campbell also mentioned the possibility of starting defensive tackle DJ Reader in individual drills.
“We’re expecting to get a lot of guys back, hopefully by Sunday,” Campbell said. “Gibbs is on track and improving. We wish we had more practice time with him, but he’s healing well and should be ready to get back to full strength.”
Last week was challenging for the Lions’ cornerback group, with veteran Carlton Davis III not practicing and rookies Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Terrion Arnold leaving Monday’s session with injuries. Campbell indicated that Rakestraw, dealing with an ankle issue, will return to practice on Monday. Davis and projected starting nickel Amik Robertson will have limited participation. Arnold is expected to return by the middle of next week.
“Arnold should get some practice in before the team’s break. He’s making progress, and I’m not too concerned,” Campbell said. “I believe we’ll have most of our key players ready for Week 1.”
Campbell also updated on rookie offensive guard Christian Mahogany, who had missed several weeks of training camp due to illness. Mahogany started to integrate back into practice last week and is working on regaining his conditioning and strength. “He’s doing well, and it’s good to have him back,” Campbell added.
