Similar to Joyner, Sellers entered college as a highly regarded quarterback after leading South Florence High to its first state championship. Initially committed to Virginia and later Syracuse, he ultimately signed with the Gamecocks during the late December signing period in 2022.
Last season, Sellers served as a backup to Spencer Rattler, who was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Sellers appeared in three games, giving fans a preview of his abilities. In his debut against Furman, he completed all four of his passes and led the Gamecocks on two scoring drives. Notably, he improvised on a play to throw a 50-yard touchdown pass to freshman receiver Tyshawn Russell.
Joyner noted that Sellers demonstrated similar flashes of potential during practice last season and predicted a bright future for both him and the USC program. “Everyone who played last year was anticipating this moment for him. We knew how talented he is and how humble he remains,” Joyner said.
“He’s one of the most talented quarterbacks I’ve ever been around. He’s incredibly dynamic and will make many impactful plays. … He’s prepared, ready, and incredibly electrifying. He’s going to bring a lot of excitement to the stadium. I can’t wait to see him play. I witnessed him making plays every day in practice and am eager for the world to see him.”
