The transfer portal is always active, even when it seems like things have settled down.
Receiver Ahmari Huggins-Bruce, who moved from Louisville to South Carolina during the offseason, has now left the Gamecocks, coach Shane Beamer announced on Thursday. Reports indicate he is returning to Louisville for his final year of eligibility.
“He is no longer with the team,” Beamer said. “I spoke with him just before heading into the radio show tonight.”
On Thursday, Beamer conducted the first of his weekly “Carolina Calls” sessions for the season and confirmed Huggins-Bruce’s departure afterward.
Hailing from Dillon, Huggins-Bruce was one of several transfer wide receivers who joined USC this season. He had appeared in 38 games with the Cardinals, accumulating 80 receptions for 1,121 yards and 10 touchdowns.
However, during spring practice and the preseason at USC, his playing opportunities seemed limited. Huggins-Bruce was working with the scout team and was not expected to be part of the Gamecocks’ top-eight receiver rotation for the Aug. 31 season opener.
After discussing with Beamer, Huggins-Bruce chose to return to Louisville for his final season, taking advantage of a transfer rule loophole that permits this move.
