On August 27, the Detroit Lions bolstered their practice squad by adding veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Patrick, who was cut by the Denver Broncos before the roster deadline, has signed with the Lions’ practice squad. The plan is for him to potentially move up to the active roster.
Patrick, who entered the NFL in 2018, has accumulated 143 receptions for 2,009 yards and 12 touchdowns over 53 games.
The signing of Patrick generated significant excitement among Lions fans and NFL analysts. Brad Evans from Bet MGM Tonight predicted that Patrick would make an impact this season, while JayDay highlighted the potential of the Lions’ receiving corps with Patrick’s addition. Rodrigo Machado also expressed that a healthy Patrick would be an upgrade over Josh Reynolds.

Despite his potential, Patrick’s injury history raises some concerns. He has missed the past two seasons due to a torn ACL in 2022 and a torn Achilles tendon in 2023. This has led some fans to question the decision to bring him on board, given his extended absence from regular-season play.
The Lions’ decision to sign Patrick follows their release of veterans Donovan Peoples-Jones and Daurice Fountain. With these departures, the Lions lacked a tall receiver on their initial roster, making Patrick’s 6-foot-4 frame an appealing addition. Coach Dan Campbell noted the need for more consistent performance from big-bodied receivers like Peoples-Jones and Fountain before their release.
Patrick, who started his NFL career as an undrafted free agent in 2017, had a notable rise with the Broncos, including a strong 2020 season. His potential to make a significant impact remains high if he can overcome his recent injuries.
