The Toronto Maple Leafs have added Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz to their training camp roster by offering him a professional tryout (PTO), as first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on September 3.
Friedman shared on X, “As just mentioned with @TheRog590, it appears Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz is joining Toronto on a PTO.”
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has extended this tryout offer to Lorentz, providing him the chance to showcase his skills and vie for a spot on the team before the start of the 2024–25 NHL season.
However, a PTO does not guarantee a roster spot. Lorentz will need to prove himself and secure a standard contract from Toronto to play in the upcoming regular season.
At 27 years old, Lorentz recently won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers. Despite playing only 38 regular-season games and scoring a single goal with 3 points, he contributed 2 goals in 16 playoff games during the Panthers’ historic run.

Although his regular-season scoring was modest, Lorentz’s championship experience and potential to add depth to the forward lineup, especially the fourth line, might appeal to the Maple Leafs.
Lorentz was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes as the 186th pick in the 2015 NHL Draft but struggled to establish himself with the team. He made his NHL debut in the 2020-21 season and was traded to the San Jose Sharks in July 2022. After a year in San Jose, he was traded to the Panthers on July 1, 2023, in exchange for Anthony Duclair. Now, Lorentz will attempt to secure a spot with his third NHL team by earning a contract with the Maple Leafs.
