Following a win over the Monarchs, the Hokies signal caller sent a message to future opponents.
Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones delivered a standout performance on Saturday night at Old Dominion, leading his team to a 37-17 win. Emulating his impressive displays from last season, the Baylor transfer rushed for a team-leading 117 yards and threw for 176 yards with a touchdown. This game showcased the dual-threat capability the Hokies had been anticipating for 2024.
Drones made the most of his opportunities, effectively utilizing both his passing and rushing abilities to challenge the Monarchs. He scored a touchdown in the second quarter with a Tush Push from the 1-yard line and began the second half with star running back Bhayshul Tuten briefly sidelined. Once Tuten returned, offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen kept featuring both players prominently.
In the third quarter, Drones executed a remarkable 53-yard run deep into Old Dominion’s territory. As he broke through the Monarchs’ secondary, he powered through two defenders before finally going out of bounds.

After the game, Drones was asked about that run and being running over those two cornerbacks.
Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones sends message to future cornerbacks
After the game, Drones talked about running over the two Old Dominion cornerbacks who attempted to tackle him high and quickly learned it was a mistake.
“I’m not really concerned about a cornerback trying to tackle me. If they go for a high tackle, that’s on them,” Drones commented.
It’s clear he’s not intimidated. He powered through the two Monarch defenders, and from now on, attempting to bring down the 6-foot-3, 234-pound quarterback with a high tackle will be ineffective. Last season, Drones showcased his ability to break through tackles and gain extra yards after contact.
When he gets moving, it’s almost impossible to stop him in the way the ODU cornerbacks attempted. Future opponents should take note: trying to tackle him high will only lead to getting bulldozed.
