Earlier this month, Virginia Tech football commit Matthew Outten switched his commitment to Penn State after originally pledging to the Hokies earlier in the summer. This unexpected change came just two days after Virginia Tech’s overtime loss to Vanderbilt on Labor Day Weekend. While it’s unclear if the game influenced his decision, another Class of 2025 commit for Brent Pry was recently seen attending a game against the Hokies’ major in-state rival.
Four-star athlete Micah Matthews, who also committed to Virginia Tech over the summer, was present for Virginia’s non-conference game against Maryland in Charlottesville. He mentioned to Brian Dohn of 247Sports that his visit was a personal matter.
Matthews confirmed that he remains fully committed to Virginia Tech for both football and baseball and plans to attend the game in Blacksburg this Saturday when Rutgers visits. He also mentioned ongoing communication with the Virginia coaching staff.
“I am 100% committed to VT and will be there next week vs. Rutgers,” Matthews told 247Sports.
Micah Matthews says he’s still committed to Virginia Tech
He explained his recent visit to Charlottesville was personal: “I’m personal friends with a few guys on the team, and my high school had a football game in Charlottesville on Friday evening. A few of them were going to come out but couldn’t make it, so I decided to visit with my dad since this might be my last chance to do so.”
Ranked as the No. 4 athlete in the Class of 2025, Matthews is a valuable recruit for both Brent Pry and Virginia Tech baseball coach John Szefc due to his dual-sport potential. As a wide receiver at the college level, he noted that Virginia’s offense looks exciting and their wide receivers play a significant role.
While Matthews’ visit to Virginia might raise questions, he remains committed to Virginia Tech, making it a situation worth keeping an eye on.
