As the NFL season approaches its fourth weekend, a South Carolina football alum is seizing a new opportunity in the league.
On Thursday, the Buffalo Bills announced the signing of former Gamecock wide receiver, kick returner, and punt returner Ahmarean Brown. He will join the practice squad but has the chance to earn a spot on the 53-man roster due to his exceptional speed and potential contributions on special teams.
Brown was unexpectedly released by the Cleveland Browns after the preseason, despite a solid performance as an undrafted free agent. While he didn’t see much action at receiver during the preseason games, he made a significant impact on special teams and caught the attention of media in Cleveland during training camp.
South Carolina football alum Ahmarean Brown was signed on Thursday by the Buffalo Bills.
With the Bills, Brown will take over a practice squad position previously held by another small, speedy South Carolina alum, Damiere Byrd. Both players share similar attributes as deep threats in the passing game, options for jet sweeps, and contributors on special teams. Brown aims to carve out a role on a Bills squad that has limited established talent at wide receiver, although they do have a reliable returner in Brandon Codrington.
During his time at South Carolina, Brown faced several minor injuries but still managed to catch 60 passes for 557 yards and score two touchdowns over three seasons. He was also a valuable special teams player, primarily as a punt returner and a coverage specialist on both punts and kickoffs.
