3-2 doesn’t have a good ring to it…
Down 20-3, the Bills rallied and had a chance to either tie the game or potentially draw a pass interference penalty to set up a field goal at the end. However, head coach Sean McDermott made a questionable call that ultimately cost the Bills the game and lost of fans blames him for that.
At one point, it seemed like the Texans would run the clock down to kick the game-winning field goal, but they made a surprising decision to pass on a third down in field goal range. C.J. Stroud’s throw resulted in intentional grounding, pushing the Texans back ten yards and out of field goal range.
The Texans then got a lucky bounce, pinning the Bills deep in their own territory. Buffalo had over 30 seconds to drive down the field, and one might expect them to run the ball to force the Texans to use their timeouts. Instead, they opted for three unsuccessful pass attempts, leaving the Texans with enough time to secure the win.
Sean McDermott costs Buffalo Bills their Week 5 matchup
When Bills punter Sam Martin took the field, his punt landed in play rather than going out of bounds, allowing the Texans to easily move into field goal range and secure a 4-1 record.
The Bills have shown that they can play great situational football, but that was not the case against Houston. Even if the Bills didn’t convert a first down but managed to get Houston to waste all of their timeouts, it more than likely would have taken more time off the clock and this game could have gone to overtime.
Instead, Bills Mafia now endures a second consecutive loss and the Bills will be hitting the road again next week for a Monday night showdown against the New York Jets, a team that they have struggled against in recent memory.
