Trade Proposal: Red Wings to Acquire Underperforming $10 Million Goalie in Swap

The Detroit Red Wings have faced uncertainty in goal, and a trade proposal suggests they could acquire a struggling goalie.

Using PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, one user suggested a deal that would bring Alexandar Georgiev from the Colorado Avalanche to the Red Wings.

The proposed trade would send Alexandar Georgiev to Detroit along with two draft picks in exchange for Talbot in a goalie swap.

Georgiev is in the final year of his three-year, $10.2 million contract signed with Colorado in 2022. The Avalanche obtained him from the New York Rangers for third- and fifth-round picks. Initially expected to be Colorado’s starting goalie, Georgiev has struggled over three seasons. In the opening three games of the 2024-25 NHL season, he has recorded a 6.58 GAA and a .787 SV%, getting pulled in the first two contests.

On the other hand, the Red Wings would trade Talbot, whom they signed to a two-year, $5 million deal this offseason. Talbot was anticipated to form a goalie tandem with Ville Husso and Alex Lyon. After two games, he boasts a 1.27 GAA and a .964 SV%, allowing the Red Wings to capitalize on his strong performance while Colorado seeks to strengthen its goalie situation.

After Alexandar Georgiev was pulled for the second consecutive game to start the season, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar defended his starting goalie.

Avalanche Coach Defends Georgiev

“I understand there’s frustration, but Georgi is our guy, he’s our starter,” Bednar said. “I have full confidence in his ability, talent, and work ethic to bounce back and help us win. Right now, it’s a mental game for him. We’ll regroup, but we also need to improve in other areas.”

In light of Georgiev’s struggles, Colorado claimed goalie Kaapo Kahkonen off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets. Kahkonen had a challenging 2023-24 season, splitting time between the San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils with a 7-24-3 record, a 3.64 GAA, and a .898 SV%. Over his NHL career, he holds a 49-67-15 record with a 3.33 GAA and a .899 SV%.

“We’ve seen better performances from our goalies in the past,” Bednar noted regarding the waiver claim. “If they can elevate their play, that’s great. And if Kahkonen can come in and perform well, that’s also great. It’s all about winning games. We want to improve incrementally in any position, especially when the risk is low.”

The Avalanche currently has Georgiev, Kahkonen, and Justus Annunen on their NHL roster.

Red Wings Place Goalie Ville Husso on Waivers

Detroit named Ville Husso its starting goalie, but he was placed on waivers on October 13.

In the season opener, Husso allowed four goals on 14 shots in just 25 minutes. Despite being waived and subsequently clearing waivers, Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde insists the team hasn’t given up on him.

“It’s always a tough conversation,” Lalonde told the Free Press. “It’s a business, and you’re managing your roster. This situation was similar to what I did with Justin [Holl]—we haven’t given up on you. We asked Justin to be ready, and just 24 hours later, he was in our lineup. We haven’t given up on Ville either. He may get another chance soon.”

Husso signed a three-year, $14.25 million deal with Detroit in 2022 during free agency. However, he has faced challenges with the Red Wings, posting a record of 35-28-9, a 3.25 GAA, and a .894 SV%.
