Few quarterbacks in NFL history have rewritten narratives as effectively as Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Initially perceived as a major risk due to accuracy issues and struggles with reading defenses before the 2018 NFL Draft, Allen has largely silenced his critics over the past seven years, establishing himself as one of the most dynamic players in the league and leading Buffalo to five straight playoff appearances.
Despite significant improvements, Allen has still faced challenges with turnovers. He has thrown 78 interceptions in his career, including a career-high 18 in 2023. Additionally, his aggressive playing style has resulted in 63 fumbles, 26 of which were lost. As he entered the 2024 season, he had accumulated 102 career turnovers, the most of any player since 2008, according to ESPN.
However, Allen has made a remarkable turnaround this season, demonstrating exceptional efficiency in taking care of the football. Through the first seven games of 2024, he has thrown no interceptions on 189 attempts, with the next closest player being Green Bay Packers backup Malik Willis, who has only 34 attempts without an interception.
In a recent press conference, Allen reflected on his performance, emphasizing the importance of being smart with the football while acknowledging the role of luck in avoiding interceptions. “A lot of pride [in not throwing an interception],” he stated. “It takes some luck. I’m just trying to take it one play at a time and make the right decision.”
Part of this success is also attributed to improved pressure from the defensive line, particularly from players like Greg Rousseau, whose pressure rate ranks him among the league’s top edge rushers, despite a lower sack total. Both statistics are essential for assessing edge rusher effectiveness.
