Ex-Bills $69 Million Star on Trade Block After Rough Start With Rams

The Buffalo Bills significantly overhauled their roster before the 2024 NFL season, releasing six veterans just ahead of free agency in March.

One of the hardest departures was cornerback Tre’Davious White. He had signed a four-year, $69 million extension in 2020 that kept him under contract through 2025. Unfortunately, an ACL tear cut short White’s 2022 season, and he suffered an Achilles injury in Week 4 of the following year.

While still recovering from the Achilles injury, White, who was the Bills’ first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, was quickly signed by the Los Angeles Rams to a one-year, $4.25 million contract. However, his situation in Los Angeles hasn’t been going smoothly.

On October 26, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Rams and Tre’Davious White are exploring options for his future, including a possible trade. Fowler noted, “The former All-Pro has been inactive, so L.A. is open to keeping him, recognizing that circumstances can change throughout the long season. However, roster changes across the league might lead to a deal.”

Tre’Davious White has participated in four out of seven games this season, amassing 12 total tackles and 2.0 passes defended. The 29-year-old is struggling to regain his All-Pro form after suffering two significant injuries.

The Rams’ season initially appeared bleak following injuries to several starters, but things are beginning to improve. With Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua back in action, Matthew Stafford and the team achieved a 30-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football in Week 8.

During his injury-plagued stretch, White missed 30 games over the last three seasons. Although the Bills couldn’t retain him, there’s a glimmer of hope for a possible re-signing at a more affordable rate. Bills general manager Brandon Beane hadn’t ruled out a return for White before he signed with the Rams.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott expressed his emotions about White’s release in March, saying, “It’s tragic, in some ways, because of the injuries. Had they not occurred, who knows where his time in Buffalo would have taken him and us?” He added, “I think he’s one of the best defensive backs to ever play in Buffalo—I truly believe that.”

One Bills fan recently shared, “Bring Back Tre?!?” Financially, Buffalo might manage it. Following their trade for Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns, the Bills have about $2.68 million in cap space. White has approximately $1.3 million left on his contract, including his base salary and per-game active bonus, ahead of the trade deadline.

However, White is currently one of the lowest-graded cornerbacks in the league, raising questions about whether the Bills, or any team, would consider trading for him.

White’s departure deeply affected Bills Mafia. Despite no longer being part of the team, he remains a beloved figure among fans.

Fans were saddened to see White struggling in Los Angeles. Reports indicated that Rams team doctor Neal ElAttrache, who repaired White’s Achilles, spent time with him during rehab, making it seem like a good fit. One fan expressed, “Man, it breaks my heart,” after hearing the trade news, while another wrote, “This is so tragic for me. Back-to-back ACL and Achilles injuries have completely changed the trajectory of his career. It wasn’t supposed to be like this!”
