Buffalo Bills GM Tied In NFL’s trade deadline With Chiefs

Brandon Beane spoke with former NFL lineman Ross Tucker on his popular podcast about the NFL’s trade deadline and the Chiefs.

In a parallel universe, Brandon Beane might already have a championship ring.

Historically, the NFL has been resistant to dynasties. With its focus on parity through a salary cap and a draft system that rewards the least successful teams, the league is designed for competitiveness.

The New England Patriots of the early 2000s were viewed as an exception, and with Tom Brady’s retirement, many anticipated a resurgence of rivalries and renewed hope for all teams.

Then the Kansas City Chiefs emerged as a dominant force.

As the general manager of the Buffalo Bills, Beane has excelled in building a competitive team, despite the challenges of attracting free agents to Buffalo. Year after year, he has created a contender in a tough AFC. However, the Chiefs have consistently been a step ahead since 2018, and they remain at the forefront in 2024.

So, how does a GM who is constantly pursuing the Chiefs navigate the NFL trade deadline? Recently, former NFL player Ross Tucker invited Beane onto his podcast to discuss the Bills’ roster, this year’s trade deadline, a potential trade for Amari Cooper, and the Chiefs’ aggressive strategies.

Beane commented on Kansas City’s moves, stating, “You’re competitive. You never want a rival, whether in your division or the AFC, to improve. We’re wired that way, but we have to prioritize what’s best for our team, whether that involves trades or other decisions.”

He reflected on the team’s trade with the Chiefs during the first day of the 2024 NFL Draft, which stirred frustration among some Buffalo fans. The Bills allowed the Chiefs to move up to select WR Xavier Worthy while they chose Keon Coleman instead.

“Fans were upset about trading with the Chiefs. But both teams made decisions they felt benefited them. Sometimes, both sides can win in a trade; it doesn’t have to be a clear victory or defeat. There are instances where both teams can come out ahead.”

Currently, while some analysts consider the Bills a formidable team in 2024 due to their recent performances, the Chiefs remain undefeated at 7-0. Beane is realistic about the challenge ahead of them.

“The Chiefs are a fantastic organization. They’ve had a lot of success and are experienced competitors. They might not dominate every game, but they know how to secure victories, and that’s significant. A lot of credit goes to Veach and Coach Reid for their approach,” Beane noted.
