Bleacher Report feels as though the Buffalo Bills should pursue Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day.
The Buffalo Bills’ defensive line has not had a great start to the 2024 season, suffering from a significant number of injuries. Star defensive tackle Ed Oliver has missed two games, and rotational player Austin Johnson has been sidelined as well. Additionally, standout rookie tackle DeWayne Carter has been placed on injured rese
rve due to a wrist injury. This wave of injuries is particularly concerning for Buffalo, which frequently rotates its defensive linemen.
Even when fully healthy, the group’s performance has been lacking. The Bills’ defensive tackles have recorded only three sacks in eight games. While the team’s run defense has shown some improvement recently, they are still giving up an average of 120.3 rushing yards per game. With the need for depth and a boost on the field, it wouldn’t be surprising if Buffalo seeks to trade for a defensive tackle before the November 5 trade deadline.
Bills general manager Brandon Beane has indicated that the team is open to making additions before next Tuesday, and Bleacher Report suggests that Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day could be a valuable target. Writer Kristopher Knox highlighted Buffalo as a fitting destination for Joseph-Day, noting that the 29-year-old would provide both depth and skill to their defensive line.
Knox commented, “The Buffalo Bills may also want to take a look at Joseph-Day. Buffalo seems ready to make a serious push in the AFC, but they’ve struggled against the run, allowing 4.8 yards per carry.
The Bills have also recently placed rookie defensive lineman DeWayne Carter on injured reserve with a wrist injury. Carter, a third-round pick, played in the first seven games of the season, starting two and recording nine tackles and four tackles for loss in his last four outings.”
Joseph-Day, a former sixth-round pick from the Los Angeles Rams, has played for the Chargers, 49ers, and Titans over the past few years. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 310 pounds, he excels against both the run and pass.
Throughout his six-year career, he has accumulated 248 tackles, 35 quarterback hits, 24 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks. This season with Tennessee, he has recorded two sacks, nine quarterback pressures, and 13 run stops in seven games, according to Pro Football Focus.
Finances may pose a challenge for the cash-strapped Bills as they consider potential trades. According to OverTheCap, they currently have only $2.7 million in available salary cap space. However, they should be able to accommodate Sebastian Joseph-Day’s contract, which includes a base salary of $1.4 million.
On paper, this acquisition makes sense. With a 1-6 record, the Titans are unlikely to make significant progress this season and may be open to trading a veteran with an expiring contract like Joseph-Day. Buffalo is in need of depth and improved performance at the defensive tackle position, and an experienced player is available for what would likely be a day-three draft pick.
Additionally, the Bills are somewhat familiar with Joseph-Day, having hosted him for a free agent visit in March. It’s worth noting that Buffalo may not be the only team interested in the interior defender, so this situation will be worth watching as the trade deadline approaches.
