Dylan Cozens Believes The Buffalo Sabres can revamp what looks like a lost season

Lindy Ruff has been aiming to boost offensive production from his forwards. Recently, in early November, he decided to shake things up, breaking up Dylan Cozens’ line to help jumpstart his scoring. Ruff also moved Cozens to the wing, hoping the change in position might spark more offensive output.

Ruff explained the decision to reporters, saying, “I’m trying to give him a bit more freedom to create more chances. By pairing him with a left-handed center who can get him the puck, he’ll have more opportunities to use his speed.”

Cozens has faced challenges this season. Before Ruff’s lineup adjustments, he’d recorded only three assists and had a faceoff win rate of just 42.02%. Defensively, he’s also had difficulties, with his season-high of five hits in a game coming against the Panthers, underscoring his struggles in physical play.

The lineup change did help Cozens on Friday as he had his first goal of the season

The Sabres took a 1-0 lead over the Islanders in the first period thanks to a goal by Dylan Cozens. The play started with a shot from Rasmus Dahlin that deflected near Jason Zucker, setting up Cozens’ scoring chance. “Sometimes that’s all you need to get going, just an easy one like that,” Cozens told reporters. “Great job by ‘Zucks’ in front of the net to make it happen.”

Although the Sabres fell 4-3 to the Islanders, this game could be the spark Cozens needs to get on track. He’s been a central part of Lindy Ruff’s plans, but until now, he hasn’t been able to deliver offensively this season. If the Sabres hope to turn things around, they’ll need more consistent production from him moving forward.

Cozens believes the switch to the wing could play to his strengths. “I think that’s one of the most dangerous things about my game,” said the 23-year-old. “I should get more looks with that, and I think it offers more shots off the rush, too.”

The Sabres have three games lined up this week, giving Cozens a prime opportunity to build on the momentum from his first goal. If he can turn this into a point streak, it could be a big boost for both him and the team. Cozens set his career high in points with 68 during the 2022-23 season, and a strong run now could help him get back to that level and help the Sabres stay competitive.

Cozens’ 68-point season in 2022-23 played a crucial role in Buffalo’s standings, bringing them within a single point of the playoffs—their closest postseason push in 13 years. With plenty of season left, Cozens has time to regain his scoring form and be a key contributor in leading Buffalo back into playoff contention.
